Men's Iron Cross Pendants With Biker Attitude

Few people who sport an iron cross pendant will actually know the significance of this ancient Gothic jewelry that has lost its meaning in our modern times. Bikers and surfers are known to wear iron or Maltese cross jewelry.

Ironically, iron cross pendants are not casually worn by World War II veterans. Rockstars and other celebrities sport this decorated style and local 'crews' across the US have been spotted wearing some form of the cross as well.

It was first used by the Teutonic knights who used it as a display of their authority and power. Through the ages, the Iron Cross became a symbol of honesty, justice and bravery. Perhaps it is for this reason Hitler attributed this famed logo to his braves as a decoration for valor shown on the battlefield. In the war era it was Germany's highest award for bravery in the forces.

However, it has acquired a reputation of being worn by aggressive, rebellious and untamed individuals who wear iron cross jewelry as an exhibition of their style. Given its war history and the fact that it is still a cross shape that is embraced by millions around the globe religiously, it becomes clear as to why it's a growing trend.

Fast forward to the modern interpretation of iron crosses and a fashion conscious male would quickly point out that it's an increasingly popular and very attractively themed design. Though it was initially made out of iron, today there's a vast selection of sterling silver and stainless steel iron cross pendants, and if budget permits, even 10K or 14K gold. However, it was not the metal that became famous and popular, but the various designs of the iron cross that caught the eye and fancy of so many people all over the world.

When one talks of the Iron cross what immediately comes to mind is the image of a cross that is cut out of a square piece of metal. Known also as a chopper cross, the simple design comes in many shapes and sizes which are sometimes wrongfully labeled as an iron cross. The original cross was designed to have the sides of the cross quite wide and tapering to the center. The arms of the cross were of equal size and this gave the cross the dimensions of a square. Today, while this Gothic themed design still holds fast there are many design variations to this original pattern. Typically there are either multiple tiny crosses making for a single pendant or one large cross as the centerpiece.

In today's jewelry production of this fantastic theme, simple non-precious metals such as stainless steel and silver combined with efficient modern manufacturing make steel and silver iron cross pendants very affordable, ranging from 20 to 100 dollars. Needless to say that the main demographic of young and mature male bikers and other groups dominated by teens, punks, rebels, surfers, and Gothic followers embrace iron cross jewelry as among the most beautiful and popular jewelry ever made. There are endless design possibilities, including custom made special patterns which have unique designer innovated style. The choice lies with the individual.

Diamond Necklaces - Georgian Necklaces

Diamond necklaces, like other jewelry of the Georgia period, were handmade. These design period in jewelry occurred at the same time as the reign of the four English kings who gave their name to the period, namely about 1714 through 1830.

Diamond necklaces from this period reflected the desire to experiment with new designs, new metals, and new ways of cutting the diamonds. At the onset of the Georgian period, diamonds were the gemstone of choice, so diamond necklaces were very popular. The demand for diamond lookalikes was so strong that a whole industry grew up using paste, rock crystal, cut steel, and marcasite (iron pyrite) as substitutes for the real thing. Even royalty was not adverse to wearing the fakes, since they were so well done.

Diamond necklaces from the early Georgian period often used large stones set in an elaborate rococo style. This placed emphasis on shell like curves, the same as found in many of the buildings created in the style. Elsewhere it was also called Baroque, or even the French style. The main characteristics are the size, the arcs and curves, and further, asymmetric designs.

As Georgian period progressed, diamond necklaces moved from rococo to Gothic revival and on to neoclassical in architecture as well in jewelry. Not many pieces are found today in Georgian style. Knowledge of the appearance mostly is from portraits commissioned during the times.

A fairly consistent giveaway in detecting Georgian era diamond necklaces is often the way in which the diamonds are mounted. Today, diamonds are often set in open work but Georgian gems typically were set over silver or gold foil and the backs of the diamonds were enclosed in metal in the same way in which rhinestones typically are mounted today. In fact, foil backing in today's jewelry pieces nearly always indicates that the stone is fake.

Other common features of Georgian diamond necklaces included gold work that was flat and low, diamonds that were backed with foil, and bezel mounting. Often enameling of black and white or cobalt blue was used. Charles Pinchbeck, an English watchmaker created a zinc and copper alloy which was used as a substitute for gold.

During the years of the Georgian period, diamond cutters set their skills to producing exciting new gem cuts which were displayed in the diamond necklaces created by the artisans. The brilliant cuts, cushion cut and rose cut all found favor with the public.

Diamond Earrings

The word 'diamond' is derived from an ancient Greek work meaning "impossible to tame." Diamonds are one of the best-known forms of carbon. They have been used as gems from time immemorial and have a wide variety of industrial applications. The popularity of diamonds increased in the 19th century because of improved cutting and polishing techniques. The quality of the diamond is usually judged by the four C's, referring to carat, clarity, color and cut.

Diamond earrings are a personal adornment worn attached to the ear lobe. Egyptians initiated the fashion of earrings by first wearing large gold hoops, which eventually grew smaller and also contained a pendant. In Babylonia and Assyria, men used to wear earrings as a sign of position. The Romans were connoisseurs of earrings set with precious stones. In the 18th century the diamond earring became more fashionable, and the 19th century witnessed the extensive use of the cameo.

Two basic types of diamond earrings exist. Diamond post and diamond wire earrings are for pierced ears, while diamond clips are for non-pierced ears. Post earrings use a clutch, nut or some other means to support it in the ear. Post earrings with a solitary diamond at the end are called stud earrings. Wire earrings like fish hooks and kidney wires use a differently shaped small wire that slips through the pierced ear to hold the earrings in place. Sometimes a hook at the back is used as an additional support. In the clip earrings a hinged clip clasps the earring in the ear lobe.

Diamond earrings vary in style, price range, size and weight. The diamond may be set with other diamonds or precious stones like emeralds, rubies and sapphires in yellow, white or red gold, silver, rhodium or platinum. There are infant and baby earrings as small as 0.06 carat, which is a 2-millimeter diamond in each ear, available for $49. On the other hand, some earrings set in platinum with an 18K princess-cut diamond are priced over $5,000, and can be as expensive as $20,000.

Elegant and sophisticated, diamond earrings have always been considered a favorite piece of jewelry with women.

Palladium Jewelry: The Inexpensive Treasure

There is a new jewelry metal on the horizon - palladium. As a platinum group metal, palladium offers customers a host of benefits that white gold and platinum can't touch. Are customers ready for a white metal that is less expensive than platinum and hypoallergenic unlike white gold? Many jewelers and jewelry stores are banking on it.

Palladium's steel-white appearance makes it an attractive jewelry alternative to white gold and platinum. However, palladium was difficult to cast with and had not been fit for jewelry casting until recently. Innovations in developing a castable palladium alloy produced 950 palladium, which is ideal for jewelry. It is expected that, within the coming months, consumers will begin to hear more about palladium and its benefits; and palladium could very well be the next revolution in jewelry. Much of this relies on the fact that palladium is in the platinum group of metals and shares many of the same attributes as platinum - high purity, good luster, and white appearance.

Palladium versus Platinum

Much of platinum's cache is due to its purity. Jewelry cast using pure gold (i.e., 24K) is soft and subject to damage, which threatens the overall look and luster of the jewelry piece. To combat this, gold is commonly mixed with copper or silver to strengthen it. The concerns over gold's softness are why gold jewelry is typically crafted using 14 or 18 karat gold. Palladium is attractive to consumers in the same way as platinum because it is a purer material that is not fabricated or man made.

Another benefit of palladium is that it is over 40% lighter than platinum, a characteristic of palladium that has jewelry designers excited. Weight is a consideration that is especially important in earrings as heavier metals and bigger designs can stretch the ear lobe and be too heavy to wear. Larger stones can be set in a palladium design and, because it is less dense, the piece won't feel overly heavy to the wearer.

The biggest downside to platinum is its price. Often, consumers seeking that white-metal appearance had to settle for white gold or sterling silver because of platinum's high price tag. Palladium is set to take a large share of the market because of its affordability. Palladium is less expensive than platinum and white gold - a trend that should continue for the near term.

Palladium versus White Gold

Why is palladium more desirable? Unfortunately, white gold jewelry is manufactured using alloys containing nickel and up to 10% of the population experiences an allergic reaction to contact with nickel. Palladium is hypoallergenic so there are not the allergy concerns that plague white gold.

Also, palladium is harder than white gold making it more durable and less likely to mar. Durability is an issue particularly when it comes to mountings. If a gem stone is set using mountings made with a softer metal, the likelihood that one of the prongs could fail and the stone could fall out is higher. Often jewelers will use a harder metal in a ring setting to combat this but with palladium the entire jewelry piece can be made with the same metal.

A Growing Market

At this time refiners are working to provide 950 palladium to jewelry manufacturers and designers and many stores are set to educate consumers on palladium. All are expecting palladium to find a market as messages about its lower price and platinum-like characteristics are presented to consumers. The demand for palladium jewelry will dictate how quickly it is integrated into designer's product lines and jewelry stores catalogs. Palladium will likely be used in the same jewelry categories as platinum, especially engagement rings and wedding jewelry.
