Opening and Closing Your Chamilia Snap and Bangle Bracelets

For Chamilia Silver/Gold Snap Bracelets:

Silver/Gold Snaps bracelets have a locking mechanism that allows you to snap the lock closed. The Lock end of the Chamilia bracelet contains two separations - one is the hinge of the lock, and the other is the opening. To open the lock, push your fingernail in between the lock until the lock opens. No need to pry the lock open, simply putting a downward pressure in between the lock will open it.

Once the lock is open, you can add or remove beads/charms on your bracelet by sliding or twisting them onto or off the Threading end of your bracelet (the opposite end of the lock).

To close your Silver/Gold Snap bracelet, open your lock end, then take the Threading end of your bracelet and place it in the indention/notch of the lock. Note that the smallest part of the threading end will fit perfectly in the notch of the lock. The knob at the very end of the Threading mechanism should be inside the lock. Close the lock until you hear a snap, which indicates the lock is securely closed. Done! 

For Chamilia Solid and Flex Bangle Bracelets:

 Your Chamilia Solid and Flex Bangle bracelets allow you to create unique charm/bead patterns by adding, removing and changing the order of your beads at any time. The following guidelines will make changing your beads will be a cinch.

Note that the new Chamilia Bangle bracelets now allow both ends to open. The older solid and flex bangle bracelets only allow one end to open.

To open your bangle bracelet, push in and twist the "ball with the C" end of the bracelet. If you have an older style, only one end will push in. This should be easy to determine, as it will not take much effort to push the spring loaded end.

Once you have pushed in and twisted the C ball end, the end should come off easily. Chamilia Solid and Flex Bangle bracelets automatically come with slide locks, so there is no need to purchase lock beads to keep your beads in place. However, you can still place lock beads on your bangle bracelet for added functionality or look. Slide the first lock off your bracelet, then remove or add the beads you want. Bangle bracelets do not contain a threaded end, so all beads should easily slide on or off the bangle.

When you are satisfied with your new bead pattern, slide your lock bead onto your bracelet to hold your beads in place, then repeat the same steps to secure the lock as you did to open the lock - push in the "C ball" lock, then twist. Your lock is secure when you can gently tug on the end and it does not move.

How to Price Handmade Jewelry

Pricing handmade jewelry seems to one topic that jewelry artists never agree on. There are lots of different viewpoints and philosophies. This article will discuss some of the things to think about as you consider how to price your jewelry, and some of the common pricing models that jewelry designers use.

Keep in mind that you do much more than make jewelry as a business owner. In order to cover costs and overhead it is essential to charge more than your hourly rate + material costs, or keep your hourly rate on the high side (i.e. $18/ hour is much more realistic than $10/ hour) if you want your business to be profitable.

One mistake that new jewelry designers often make is to price their work too low.

Here are a few pricing tips:

-Don't compete with imports on pricing! Your quality is better, and you can never compete with those that make $2 a day. Instead, position yourself as the high quality artisan that you are, and command reasonable prices.

-As a newcomer, you can start lower if you would like, and move your pricing up as you become more well-known.

-Lower pricing also can work against you because it cheapens the perceived value of your work. People tend to think that you get what you pay for, so if you charge too low, people tend to think you make garbage.

I have another reason for not charging too low. This is kind of my personal soapbox:

If you charge too low, you are not only cheapening the perceived value of your own work, you are also cheapening the work of others because the public learns to think that some artisans who charge what they are worth, are charging too much.

Those artisans that charge what they are worth then have to work so much harder to convince customers that their work is worth the cost.

That said, as a jewelry designer, you need to consider 2 types of pricing: wholesale and retail.

Wholesale and Retail Pricing Models

Common wholesale pricing models used by jewelry designers:

-3 x the material cost

-3.5 x the material cost

-$18/hour-labor plus 1x materials plus 50% (or whatever you want your hourly wage to be)

-Eyeballing i.e. guessing at what it should be worth (not recommended, but common)

-$35/hour-labor plus 1x materials

-$26/hour-labor plus 1x materials plus 50%

-$20/hr.labor + mat. + 5%overhead + 20%profit

Common retail pricing models used by jewelry designers:

-1.4 x wholesale

-1.5 x wholesale

-1.6 x wholesale

-1.7 x wholesale

-1.8 x wholesale

-1.9 x wholesale

-2.0 x wholesale

-The ever common but not recommended "eyeballing" method

It may not be perfect, but you can adjust to fit your needs:) AIR BUBBLES IN YOUR CANE: You can remove the air bubbles once you've assembled the cane and begin to reduce. Squeeze for a few moments (starting at the center of the cane, then moving towards the edges) look at your cane and see if you see any air bubbles (the clay will bubble up in some places where air is trapped) and you can pierce them with your razor blade to release the air. You can also try to make sure that as you assemble the cane that all the sides are touching smoothly without any air trapped. It's much easier to do this if you work slowly. Treat the cane like a puzzle, so that all the sides touch completely as if they are made to fit together:)
